OWALO NAMED GOR MAHIA PATRON
Gor Mahia Football Club has officially confirmed Eliud Owalo as its new club patron, succeeding the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away recently.
Owalo’s appointment took effect from November 1, 2025, marking a significant moment for Kenya’s most decorated football team.
The club’s chairman, Ambrose Rachier, formally announced the appointment, emphasizing that this follows Owalo’s previous role as deputy patron and acting patron announced in mid October after Odinga’s demise.
“This is to formally notify the general public, the football fraternity and Gor Mahia fans at large that the club has confirmed the appointment of Hon. Eliud Owalo as the substantive club patron,” read part of the statement signed by Rachier.
Owalo, a lifelong Gor Mahia supporter and former Cabinet Secretary, has played a hands on role in the club before his formal elevation.
He contributed notably to the club’s activities, including funding a new 42-seater team bus worth KSh20 million and supporting crucial player signings to strengthen the squad, such as goalkeeper Byrne Omondi and players Mike Kibwage, Siraj Mohammed, and Lewis Bandi.
His involvement extends to attending matches, motivating players, and backing the club’s welfare initiatives.
The appointment of Owalo as patron is seen as a continuation of the strong political and community ties that have long been part of Gor Mahia’s identity.
His vision for the club includes infrastructural development such as a stadium, clubhouse, and housing for players, alongside professionalizing the club’s administration to reclaim its stature both locally and in African competitions.
With this new chapter beginning under Eliud Owalo’s leadership, Gor Mahia looks to move forward from the legacy of Raila Odinga while focusing on sustainability, growth, and maintaining its position as a top football club in Kenya and the continent.
