Wajir Security Breach: MCA Aspirant Defends Ruto Approach as Police IG Launches Probe
A dramatic security incident unfolded in Wajir County when MCA aspirant Ahmed Muhumed rushed toward President William Ruto’s podium during a NYOTA funds disbursement event.
Prompting swift intervention by security aides now the man has broken his silence, while Police IG Douglas Kanja addresses the President’s security amid public concerns.
Incident Unfolds in Wajir
President Ruto paused his speech on Thursday to calmly instruct his team to “relax” with the unidentified man charging forward, assuring “we’ll meet later” before resuming amid heightened security.
The incident unfolded at Wajir Stadium on February 12, as the Head of State addressed a crowd attending the Nyota Capital disbursement forum.
Later, a man dressed in a white shirt and blue jeans emerged from behind and charged toward the podium.
Muhumed, speaking to the media afterward, claimed no malice: “I just wanted to talk to the President about my MCA seat aspirations,” showing little regret for the breach.
“I only wanted to greet him and share with him my ambition of the 2027 election. As I already told you, I’m an aspirant,” he said.
The event proceeded uninterrupted, with no harm to Ruto or attendees, highlighting the Presidential Security Unit’s quick response.
IG Kanja’s Response and Probe
National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed the President’s safety was never at risk, praising the “swift and professional” handling.
IG Kanja has ordered a three-day inquiry to probe procedural gaps and recommend fixes, reaffirming NPS commitment to securing VIP events.
“The National Police Service (NPS) acknowledges a security incident that occurred today during the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) event in Wajir County. The event was graced by His Excellency Dr. William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H., President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces,” read part of the statement.
This follows similar scares, like a Mombasa podium rush six days prior and a Migori shoe incident last May, where Ruto again urged restraint.
Broader Security Context in Kenya
The Wajir episode underscores ongoing challenges for presidential security during public engagements, especially youth-focused programs like NYOTA, amid Kenya’s vibrant political scene.
Social media buzz mixes praise for security efficiency with calls for better crowd control at rallies.
As IG Kanja’s team investigates, it raises questions on balancing accessibility with protection for leaders like Ruto, whose tours often draw massive crowds in regions like North Eastern.
