Tragic Negligence? Father Blames Hospital in Kenyan Footballer’s Final Hours
The father of Silas Abungana, a promising midfielder for Kakamega Homeboyz FC, has come forward with heartbreaking new details about his son’s final moments, pointing fingers at Kakamega General
Silas tragically passed away on February 4, 2026, just hours after playing in a Premier League match against Mara Sugar FC, leaving the Kenyan football community in shock.
The Father’s Heartbreaking Account
Anthony, Silas’s father, recounted how his son suffered severe head injuries following an alleged stabbing by his younger brother on the night of February 3.
However, according to Daniel Mukumbi, a police officer in Kakamega, no action has yet been taken against the suspect, who reportedly fled after the incident.
“So far, nothing has been done, but we have been in contact with the family since the incident happened at home and involved family members. Reports indicate that the young man escaped after harming Silas,” Mukumbi said.
Rushed to Kakamega General Hospital, Silas reportedly endured delays in critical care, with the father claiming staff failed to act swiftly despite the player’s dire condition. “They watched him slip away,” he told reporters, that highlight systemic lapses in emergency response.
“When I got to the ward, no one could help me. I took him to the hospital at around 2 am on Tuesday night, but by the time I returned at six o’clock, nothing had been done. He unfortunately died at six o’clock on Wednesday,” he said.
“Silas died without being treated, even after spending hours in the ward,” he added.
This incident has amplified broader concerns in Kenyan sports, where athletes often face inadequate medical support during high-stakes games.
Kakamega Homeboyz FC confirmed the “unimaginable loss” and urged privacy, while the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has yet to issue an official statement as of February 6.
Football Community’s Outpouring of Grief
Silas, positioned as a key player for his team sitting sixth in the FKF Premier League standings, was known for his tenacity on the pitch.
“Such devastating news. Mathare United extends its condolences to Silas’ family, friends, and everyone associated with Kakamega Homeboyz FC. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Silas,” the club stated.
Tributes have flooded social media, with fans and teammates mourning a talent cut short at the peak of his career.
“During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss. The club will issue further communication in due course. Rest in peace, Silas,” the club said.

Recent Kenyan football tragedies, including mob violence against ex-players like Eric Wafula and construction deaths tied to stadium projects, underscore the vulnerabilities beyond the game.
This case spotlights ongoing issues in local healthcare and player welfare, from delayed salaries fueling disputes to poor on-site medical facilities.
As Kenya eyes hosting AFCON 2027, calls grow for better safety protocols and hospital accountability. Families like the Abunganas demand justice, with potential investigations looming into the hospital’s role.
