Holiday Scammers Target Kenyans: DCI Arrests Fake Landlord in Mombasa Fraud Bust

Kenyan police have arrested a con artist in Nyali, Mombasa, who posed as a property owner to defraud online holiday bookers, highlighting rising cyber threats during the festive season.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) warns travelers to verify deals before paying, as scammers exploit platforms advertising cheap beachfront stays.

This case underscores the need for caution amid a surge in digital fraud .

A Nairobi family spotted “Brima Mangu Apartment 2B” online on December 1, 2025, and negotiated with the suspect, who called himself Brian Masika.

They agreed on KSh 6,000 per night, sending KSh 24,000 via mobile money for four nights, only to find no property upon arrival in Mombasa.

However, when the family arrived in Mombasa three days later, the suspect had cut off all communication, leaving them stranded.

Detectives used forensic traces to nab the suspect at his hideout; he now faces court.

The DCI confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and will be arraigned in court.
