Raila Odinga’s Sister Beryl Achieng Odinga Dies, Family Mourns Another Loss
Raila Odinga’s sister, Beryl Achieng Odinga, has passed away suddenly while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
The Odinga family announced her death with deep sadness, describing it as a profound loss that leaves an immense void in their lives.
“It is with a heavy heart, but in acceptance of the will of God, that we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga. While we are deeply saddened by her demise and the immense void left in our lives, we take solace in the belief that she is safe in the Lord’s arms. We are thankful for the invaluable gift of the time we were privileged to share with her and for the profound impact she had on all who knew her.”
Beryl was the youngest sibling of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who himself passed away just over a month earlier.
Despite being part of one of Kenya’s most influential political families, Beryl maintained a relatively private life.
She was a trained and respected professional, notably making history as the first Black Town Clerk of Mutare, Zimbabwe’s third-largest city.
She also served as Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC), where she was praised for championing reforms aimed at improving service delivery.
She was also known for her remarkable educational and social connections; during Oburu Oginga’s birthday celebration in October 2023, she revealed that she had been a classmate of former Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.
Beryl was regarded as a devoted mother and a pillar of strength within the Odinga family.
She had been unwell for some time and had sought treatment both in Kenya and abroad, following a prolonged battle with illness.
The family expressed solace in their faith, believing she is now at peace. Funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated in due course.
