He was serving as a team leader for the Creative Arts and Sports paper and had been actively marking since the exercise started on November 7, 2025.

Mutuku was also a teacher at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County, with years of experience as a KNEC examiner during the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) period before transitioning to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO, Dr. David Njengere, expressed profound sadness over the loss of an experienced and dedicated educator, describing Mutuku as a committed professional who made significant contributions to Kenya’s national examinations over the years.

KNEC extended its deepest condolences to his family, friends, fellow examiners, and the wider education community. The marking process continues, with efforts to support examiner welfare being a key priority.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Mr. Mutuku’s family, friends, loved ones and fellow examiners,” said KNEC CEO Dr. David Njengere in a statement on Tuesday.

The marking exercise is part of the national exam management process, with results for the Junior Secondary tests expected to be released on December 11, 2025.
