EMBU GOVERNOR CRITICIZED FOR DISTRIBUTING LOLLIPOPS DURING MBEERE NORTH CAMPAIGN

The incident, which took place in the Kanyambura area as part of efforts to drum up support for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Leo Wamuthende, sparked intense debate over campaign tactics and respect for voters.

Many residents and social media users viewed the act of giving sweets to grown adults as inappropriate, arguing that it belittled voters and sent the wrong message about the seriousness expected in political campaigns.

“Kenyans are the stupid ones…we deserve bad leadership. How is a whole grown man lining up for a sweet?” said Kevin Karani.

‘From sukumawiki to lollipop it’s a new low,” Kamatimu said.

Critics suggested that hospitality gestures like distributing lollipops may suggest voters are easily swayed by small handouts instead of genuine development agendas and meaningful leadership promises.

Some residents voiced concern that such gestures undermine voters’ dignity and reflect a worrying trend among leaders to use superficial tokens rather than addressing pressing community needs like infrastructure and services.

A social media user by the name Mobul said “With this kind of mentality, is it any wonder that we end up being ruled by the greedy, brutal, evil and the incompetent? Said Mobul .

Comments circulating online referenced similar campaign practices, noting that politicians often resort to providing small gifts, such as vegetables or tea, to win support instead of substantive policy proposals.

Governor Mbarire’s campaign counterpart in the event, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, attempted to refocus attention on promised economic projects, including the construction of a market in Kanyambura and other ongoing road works in the region, emphasizing development as a core priority.

The backlash highlights growing public demand for accountability, respect, and tangible progress from elected officials, especially in electorates like Mbeere North where frustrations run high.

Some citizens urged leaders to engage with voters through constructive dialogue and solutions to local challenges rather than employing symbolic or gimmicky approaches.

Ultimately, the incident serves as a reminder of the evolving expectations of Kenyan voters who increasingly call for integrity, honesty, and meaningful leadership in political campaigns.
