PRESIDENT RUTO LEADS AFRICAN UNION
President William Ruto is the African Union (AU) Champion for Institutional Reforms and has been leading a continental effort to strengthen, streamline, and financially stabilize the AU.
His recent meeting on November 11, 2025, with AU leadership and various high level panels at State House Nairobi focused broadly on advancing key reform priorities ahead of a Special AU Summit in November in Angola.
The reforms aim to revitalize peace and security frameworks, ensure sustainable financing through measures like a 0.2% import levy, operationalize the African Court of Justice, and streamline the AU institutions including the Pan-African Parliament and the AU Assembly’s procedures.
The overarching goal is to transform the AU into a more efficient, accountable, and responsive body capable of delivering Africa’s Agenda 2063 vision.
This includes repositioning Africa geopolitically, reinforcing Pan-Africanism, and addressing complex peace and governance challenges on the continent.
There is a call for renewed momentum by member states to accelerate these reforms, which have been unfolding since 2016 but now require tangible progress and implementation.
The current reform agenda includes practical steps like categorizing AU Assembly decisions for clarity, enhancing governance and security architectures, and ensuring the AU is less donor-dependent and financially self-sustaining.
These efforts position the AU as a stronger continental institution ready to face evolving global and regional challenges while uniting member states for Africa’s development and security
