For the high-profile event attracting thousands, a rare scenario of a concert held within one of the country’s major stadiums, the organizers funneled the entire crowd through a single, small, one-person gate.

Compounding this bottleneck was a complete lack of basic crowd control infrastructure; there were no barriers or serpentine lines to organize the flow. Attendees were simply told to line up on the road, a system that relied entirely on patience and good order, which are always finite resources in a dense, waiting crowd.

“The security had set out two lines of women and two lines of men, all funneling into this one small, single-man gate in the middle. Now, for men, there were about two lines of 40 people, so it wasn’t too bad. I just joined the back. But for the women, there were a few 100, at least a couple of 100 women who were waiting to get in,” he recounted.

Eyewitness Accounts from the Ground

Citizen TV journalist Immanuel Ndungu shared a harrowing firsthand account on Instagram, describing how non-ticket holders overwhelmed security, forcing entry and sparking chaos at the gates.

He recounted the moment the crowd breached barriers, leading to a crush where people screamed “Can’t Breathe!” as panic spread, with soldiers pushing back using sticks in the disorganized VIP entrance.

Viral videos and posts amplified these stories, showing prolonged ticket scanning delays and rain exacerbating the rush into stands.

Karen Lojore, a woman in her mid-20s with a valid ticket, died from injuries sustained in the stampede; her body was taken to City Mortuary after failed resuscitation at Nairobi West Hospital.

Reports vary on the toll, with some claiming dozens injured and unconfirmed mentions of additional deaths, fueling Reddit and X discussions on police inaction.

Social media “tea” highlights how ticket holders, including VIPs, endured concrete seating, no water, and overcrowding.

Promoter Tukutane Entertainment faced backlash for poor planning, echoing past scandals like the 2020 Sauti Sol pullout and Asake’s own 2022 London concert crush.

Local act Kodong Klan withdrew hours before, citing disrespect and soundcheck interference, while Asake skipped a pre-party meet-and-greet.

Attendees on platforms like TikTok and Instagram decried absent security checks and emergency protocols.

Viral Tea Ke and gossip sites buzzed with clips of the breach, drawing parallels to global crowd disasters and questioning Kenyan event safety regulations.

Public fury on Reddit demands better crowd control, with fans vowing boycotts amid grief for victims’ families. This incident underscores the need for stricter promoter oversight to prevent entertainment turning deadly.
