KRA Rolls Out eCUSTOMS App to Digitize and Speed Up Border Trade
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has launched a new digital system called the eCUSTOMS mobile application to reduce queues and ease border clearance at Kenya’s busiest border points.
The app, unveiled on Nov 24th 2025 at the Busia One Stop Border Post (OSBP), is designed to digitize and simplify customs declarations, facilitating faster, paperless, and more transparent customs processes for traders, truck drivers, and passengers.
Dr. Lilian Nyawanda, Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, stated that the eCUSTOMS solution would ease cross border trade and create a more conducive business environment by simplifying customs declarations and modernizing border operations.
It aims to significantly cut down clearance times and reduce long queues, saving truck drivers up to one hour per vehicle and small scale traders about KES 750 per customs declaration.
The eCUSTOMS app enables users to self declare cargo with simplified digital forms, pre declare goods before arrival, and fast track processing for goods valued at USD 2,000 or less, boosting SME activity.
This system is expected to enhance regional trade efficiency, ease cross border trade, and promote a conducive business environment by modernizing border operations.
It was developed in partnership with TradeMark Africa and the British High Commission as part of a 15-year collaboration to improve regional trade systems.
Further, KRA stated that the launch of the app builds on a 15-year collaboration between them, the UK, TMA, and KRA aimed at improving regional trade systems.
TMA Board Chair and former Ethiopian Prime Minister H.E. Hailemariam Boshe praised the app as a significant advancement towards deeper regional integration.
Officials highlighted that the platform supports the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by streamlining trade flows within Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and beyond.
The app is available on Android and iOS, marking a significant technological advancement in Kenya’s customs system that benefits traders, transporters, and travelers alike by making border processes faster, cost effective, and user friendly.
